My Story

In early November 2021 my bro-in-law Tom Nickels thought he had pulled a muscle in his back and it was painful enough that he went to hospital. After being told it was nothing serious he was sent home with Ibuprofen.

Two days later, due to the pain and some other symptoms, he was back in hospital. Though they took it more seriously this time; sending him for scans and checks, it was too late.

Within a week he was diagnosed with Pancreatic cancer and within 10 days of going back to hospital he had passed away.

He left behind two beautiful young girls aged 6 and 4 and a devastated partner, mum, sister and family.

He was 38, slim, active and ostensibly healthy.

A year and a half later we still cannot quite comprehend what happened to Tom or believe there is a disease in modern times that can claim someone so seemingly healthy so quickly and with no warning signs.

In response to this, my school friend Sam and I are cycling the 102 miles of RideLondon 2023 to raise money for Pancreatic Cancer Research. We are hoping to raise £1200 or ideally more to fund research into this devastating disease so that hopefully, in the future, people like Tom can be diagnosed early and treated and no family has to live through what Tom’s has endured these past 14 months.

RideLondon is the world’s greatest festival of cycling. At its heart is the RideLondon 100, where participants take part in a cycling challenge on traffic-free roads in London.

Not only is it an amazing feat of cycling endurance that’s sure to impress, it presents a great fundraising opportunity!

As well as the sportive, RideLondon features family-friendly cycle rides, again on traffic-free roads, passing some of the capital’s most iconic landmarks and giving participants more ways to raise funds for their favourite charities.
